ALTERNATE POLE BARN SITE

This is a follow-up study to the discussion of whether the "meadow" site is suitable to build on. It also illustrates the view separation that can be gained by this alternate placement.

Page two of this document shows a reconstuction of the 1916 survey (the black lines). Our current mainline is close to that alignment , but off by a foot or two here and there. The green lines show the current extents of our siding (approximate - not surveyed). Anyone who can open and AutoCadLT version 12 file can have a copy of this file for the asking.

The red lines show what can be done placing the polebarn along the driveway to the roundhouse. Placement of the polebarn is approximate as somewhere after the end of the 1916 Pope Mill siding the current road starts to weave through the trees. Having drawn this out, I give up on the thought of two separate 2 track wide barns.

As drawn, the lead off the mainline is a 20 degree curve (~288 ft radius) while the curves in the ladder to the barn are 26 degree (222 ft radius - same as the south end of our current siding). Sliding the barn lengthwise further down the road (to the northwest), and/or laterally toward the turntable by even ten feet would ease those 26 degree curves. The drawing shows a location where separation of the barn from the roundhouse is 196 feet and the distance from the barn to the front of the section house is about 150 feet.

For those not comfortable interpreting the survey drawing, page three shows the same track elements superimposed on a photo from Google Earth. As an estimate, the front of the barn is about 400 ft up the road from the outhouse behind the Spear building. And yes, the barn is drawn as 160 ft long.
