PULP RACK

CONVERSION

**********

This project was completed quitely in 2007 as a surprise for visitors to the 2007 National Narrow Gauge Convention.

All projects begin with the materials. Here we see flatcar #271 sitting in the roundhouse, still in need of some deck repair. But, the posts and rails for the racking are ready to go.

Here, most of the posts are inplace and the railing has been added at the far end.

Same work status as the previous photo.

The car is going out for a test run. Note that the rods to hold the side posts from spreading have been added. Still missing are the iron links to keep the corners together. Ken Berlo, who ran this project, and did most of the work, is riding the rack car.

It's the morning of her public debut. The iron loops have just been added to the corner posts. This project is complete, albeit just in time! The ONLY existing pulp rack car is staged with caboose 556. It will shortly be picked up by Monson #3 to be pulled to the mainline opposite Maplewood shelter where #3 will cut loose and pick up two boxcars from the siding making up a very neat photo freight.
