LOCO #4

PROJECT

**********

This project began in late 1999 with the removal of the tank truck. Steve Earle and Ken Berlo then remanufactured this truck over the winter with a swing bolster and provisions for air brakes. In the spring, replacement of the engine and one of the two transmissions began. The original engine was on its last legs. The new engine is from a recently wrecked Mustang. The locomotive is still not "complete" but was put back in service during Old Home Days 2000. A false coal bunker is planned as a cosmetic improvement as well as a new instrument panel for the motor.

This is #4 re-entering service on August 18, 2000. The train was handled to this point with the Brookville and idler flat visible in the background. They have now been cut off and #4 is about to proceed with caboose #559 and coach #6 with it's first load since the new engine, transmission, and rear truck have been installed.

It's almost impossible to see all the parts of a swing bolster truck once it is in use, but that's what this one now is. Yes, the loco does ride much better with this improvement!!!

This photo shows how the infernal combustion engine fits into the locomotive. The doors on either side are a 2002 addition. We are still going to place a control panel where the coal boards should be (right in front of the battery), and add a removable false top to both waterproof the motor and for appearance.

I'm not sure whether the photo credit for this one goes to myself (R. Troup), K. Hansen, or S. Searles. Nonetheless, on this rainy day you can see the drops streaming off the rear of the cab. The locomotive did not start until I both wiped the ignition wires AND used starter fluid. We had to tie a plastic tarp over the engine so it would run for the rest of the day! That false top is sure going to be handy for this kind of weather.
