BOXCAR #73

PROJECT

**********

This GENERAL SERVICE CAR was completely sheathed in 2000.

Projects for 2001 will include couplers and a second coat of paint.

This car was sheathed with a "trademark" beaded tongue-and-groove lumber. (It had been re-sheathed at some point with the usual chamfered siding.) The modern "bead-board is twice the width of the old, while retaining a 3 ½" "face, so the resheathed car has half the joints between boards now.

A future project for all the boxcars is to add the roofwalks and hand brakes. Ladder stiles, roof walks and some of the other exposed wood are being fabricated of pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine, so that they'll last with a minimum of maintenance.

Boxcar #73 looked like this in May, 2000.

This is how Boxcar #73 looked on September 4, 2000. This car has been restored except for needing a new roof. Endbeams and couplers also need to be reinstalled.

Yes, some of our members do show up to work somewhat out of season!

2001 saw this car get it's end beam and buffer work done. No work got done in 2002. Essentially, the car is awaiting couplers.
