BOXCAR #121

PROJECT

**********

This GRAIN SERVICE CAR is also going to be sheathed in 2001. 121 also needs both end sills replaced and some other sill work.

Boxcar #121 shot on Sept. 4, 2000. Another gem still in need of much care.

October, 2002 finds this car sheathed and hoping to wake up in 2003, after a long winter's nap, with rails and trucks under her. She is the last of the boxcars in our possesion that is not on the rails.

August 20-21, 2003 were the moving days for boxcar 121. Here is the interior at about Noon on 8/20, after stored materials have been taken out.

The car has been jacked up almost to the height necessary to get her on the trailer.

All loaded and ready to move. Note the car extends almost to the hitch ball which was necessary for balance, but makes for difficult maneuvering lest the tow vehicle get damaged. This was accomplished by about 6:30PM on 8/20.

On 8/21 we commenced to actually make the move. Here the trailer has been moved a grand total of about 100 feet, placing the car over the rails to our coach shed. Note that a shop truck has already been placed under one end. The Plymouth will now slide the boxcar most of the way off the trailer so the other end can be jacked, trailer removed, and rear truck rolled into place.

One of the reasons we hate our shop trucks. Yes, the gauge at the points is a little wide. But the bigger problems are that the treads on the wheels are narrow, wheels are a very small diameter, wheels are not press fit (or even tight) on axles, and the bolster bearing points are wood blocks.

Alas, by mid-afternoon, boxcar 121 is finally over the rails again. She will still have to wait in line to get good trucks under her.
